The Shadow Riders (1982)

Michael and Pax celebrate a listener's birthday with a Sam Elliott Western, specifically The Shadow Riders, a TV movie co-starring Tom Selleck. It was directed by Andrew V. McLaglen and also features Katharine Ross, Ben Johnson, and Geoffrey Lewis.

Pax also watches James Arness and Angie Dickinson in Gun the Man Down (1956).

  1. I've seen Shadow Riders many times. I've come to this through many paths, Tom Selleck (Quigley and Magnum P.I.), Sam Elliott, and John Wayne.
This reminded me a lot of Shenandoah with James Stewart, also directed by Andrew McLaglen. Andrew is the son of Victor McLaglen, who is closely associated with John Wayne, and has been in many of Wayne's films. Andrew went on to direct many of Wayne's films. It's a weaker copy of Shenandoah, but still a great movie on a TV budget, a 4/5 for me.
So, it's no surprise that I love this movie. The casting of the brothers is excellent with Selleck, Elliot and their uncle Ben Johnson.
Tom Selleck also did two TV-Movie Westerns for TNT, if memory serves, which were great; Monte Walsh (2003), a remake of the Lee Marvin 1971 film, and Crossfire Trail (2001). Both were directed by Simon Wincer, another big western film director. Crossfire Trail is a L'Amour story.
This movie also had a great supporting cast of character actors and classic Hollywood greats.
