Hitchin' Post | Our Top 15 Westerns

When listener Mathias Skeppstedt sent in the list of his Top 15 Favorite Westerns, Michael and Pax decided to come up with their own lists to compare. Each of the three has a mix of classics and surprises, and we run through all of them in this short(ish) episode.

  1. I too have a film podcast (The John Derek Filmography and More Podcast). I love your various podcasts and am inclined towards making lists so I have to put my two cents in here about the 15 best westerns.

    15. The Singer Not the Song (1961) director Roy Ward Baker
    14. Sergeants 3 (1962) John Sturges-The best ratpack film
    13. Murieta (1965) George Sherman
    12. Blood on the Moon (1948) Robert Wise
    11. Doc West (2009) Terrence Hill-Very funny western made by the great Terrence Hill.
    10. My Little Chickadee (1940) Edward Cline-Fields' worst sound film, but still a banger.
    09. Giant (1952) George Stevens-one of the great epics, but maybe not enough of a western to rank much higher.
    08. McCabe and Ms Miller (1971) Robert Altman
    07. The Spikes Gang (1975) Richard Fleischer-This director had a way with genre cinema.
    06. The Shootist (1976) Don Siegel
    05. Dead Man (1995) Jim Jarmusch
    04. El Topo (1970) Jodo
    03. The Broken Land (1962)John Bulshelman- early Nicholson film, standard B western done absolutely right.
    02. Rooster Cogburn (1975) Stuart Miller-second only to African Queen for great Hepburn pairings.
    01. Silent Tongue (1993) Sam Shepard-grief filled allegory featuring the ultimate River Phoenix performance.
