Red River (1948)

Michael and Pax watch the Howard Hawks / John Wayne classic Red River featuring Montgomery Clift, Walter Brennan, and Joanne Dru.

Also: Comics! Pax reads Wild West, Book 1: Calamity Jane by Jacques Lamontagne and Thierry Gloris. And Michael reads IDW's collection of Doug Wildey's Rio: The Complete Saga.

  1. John Wayne showing that perhaps his best acting turns are as complex "bad" characters. Surrounded by other very good performances and unfortunately let down by the ending undercutting some of the built-up emotional content by making it seem not to matter.

Got a suggestion for a film more along the psychological and tension lines as compared to action: "Garden of Evil" made in 1954 and filmed in Mexico. Gary Cooper being very Gary Cooper-ish, and featuring Richard Widmark and Susan Hayward in the other major roles.
