Gun Fury (1953)

Pax continues his series of Westerns Starring People Not Necessarily Known for Westerns, with Donna Reed in Gun Fury. Also starring Rock Hudson.

Michael makes progress in his Western chronology project with three more Zorro adaptations and Pax keeps up with his reading of Xavier Dorison and Ralph Meyer's Undertaker comics.

  1. I don't recall seeing "Gun Fury", but I have seen Rock Hudson in the other westerns you mentioned. He just doesn't seem to be able (or be asked to put out) the sort of riveting intensity that other actors like Stewart, Wayne, etc. can.

  2. I've seen a few of the Zorro films including George Hamilton's Zorro: The Gay Blade, which is very funny. I've also seen the classic, The Mark of Zorro, with the great Tyrone Power. When I think of Zorro in film, I usually think of the Antonio Banderas films and the Tyrone Power version as some of the best versions.
I'm also a fan of Bruce Campbell and he did a funny series called "Jack of All Trades" where he plays a Zorro-type character fighting against Napoleon's brother. A very funny one-season series.

I stumbled on this and watched it in 2017. I've not seen too many Rock Hudson westerns, but I did enjoy Horizons West, with Robert Ryan playing his brother. I also loved The Undefeated, where he starred with John Wayne.
It is comical to see some of the scenes filmed for 3D in Gun Fury where stuff is thrown at the camera. All in all this a forgettable western. The only other movie that comes to mind when I think of Rock Hudson are the films he did with Doris Day; Pillow Talk, Lover Come Back and Send Me No Flowers. I've been watching her films recently with my wife.
