Ride Lonesome (1959)

Pax and Michael discuss one of Budd Boetticher and Randolph Scott's many collaborations. Ride Lonesome also stars James Best, Pernell Roberts, James Coburn, Karen Steele, and Lee Van Cleef. And in "What We've Been Westerning": Season 1 of Westworld and Marvel's Apache Skies mini-series by John Ostrander and Leonardo Manco.

  1. I've seen most of the Budd Boetticher westerns and I found them to be very good films in my memory. Looking at his list of movies that I've sseen, his still stand out in my memory.
I went into this movie expecting the predictable revenge/chase story but was happily suprised by the ending and story. I did not want to see the seemingly inevitable duel between Boone and Brigade as I really liked both characters. The actors in this movie were great all around. I've seen very little of James Best outside of Dukes of Hazzard so this was a treat. Same with Pernell Roberts and Bonanza.
My one nitpick is that I would have liked more character development for Lee Van Cleef's Frank though. This is because I'm a fan of Van Cleef. I would have liked them to play up why Van Cleef's Frank was so much worse than Billy John. You only got hints at why he was an imposing figure. Billy John didn't seem particularly dangerous, just more impulsive.
I generally like any film with Randolph Scott in it.
